Toshiba L500 review - one of the better performers in its price range.

The Toshiba L500’s exterior design is clever, given that the screen itself is a 15.6in (39cm) affair, and that few other laptops with a similar sized screen can manage to fit the key layout that this laptop has into the space available. The layout, which integrates a numeric keypad next to the regular keyboard without compromising layout, plus it includes large 0, Enter and + keys – good for those doing a lot of spreadsheet work. That said, it can come across as a little cramped.

The hardware on the Toshiba L500, like many at this price, is more than capable of handling undemanding applications; however, the intensive stuff, like recent 3D games, is a bridge too far for this machine. Even so, with a dual-core processor and 4GB of RAM, this is one of the faster machines at this price bracket.

As far as inputs and outputs go, there is an HDMI port, an eSATA port for external hard drives and three USB ports, however as the eSATA port doubles as one of the USB ports you may find your networking and connectivity options a little restrained by the lack of ports.

As for movies, this machine has some good points and bad points; the screen is colourful, however there is a dark patch near the centre; the glossy finish may create an annoying reflective effect in brightly lit rooms. The speakers could use a little extra bass.

Overall, though, the Toshiba L500 represents a decent buy when compared to its rivals.
