Samsung X420 review

The Samsung X420 has a 14” (35cm) screen, which is bright and clear like with most Samsung products; the screen can be dimmed to save power if, say, you are using the X420 as an oversized mp3 player. Also, the colour distortion that some laptops experience is not as prominent, so a few people can all watch a movie on this machine all at once. The size, though, is smaller than some at this range; many offer a 15.6” (39cm) screen.

The processor on offer tips the scales at 1.3GHz with 3GB of RAM to back it up. There are more powerful processors out there at this price, however the RAM is as good as it gets for the money. That said, this is a dual-core processor, therefore multitasking is not an issue despite the apparent lack of punch on offer. That said, similar priced products do offer more bang for your buck. The 250GB should be more than sufficient for storage of audio, video and office files.

Connectivity is provided by 802.11n WiFi, Ethernet, three USB slots, Bluetooth and an HDMI outlet for high definition audiovisual content. There is also a VGA outlet for non-HD content; at this level the options are fairly standard.

As far as the keyboard and touchpad goes, the X420 has a full-size keyboard, but without the separate numeric keypad. The touchpad could have been a little larger to accommodate the multitouch features available here; instead the status readouts are below the touchpad, which makes them a little difficult to spot during normal operation. The battery should provide for around six hours of normal use before a recharge is needed, which is impressive.

Summary

Overall, the Samsung X420 is a decent machine and should suit the needs of most users. It’s smaller size makes for increased portability against the 15.6” (39cm) machines.
