Samsung R520 review - one of the best in its price range

In terms of visuals, there is little to fault in this machine. There is no doubt that the Samsung R520 is an impressive looking notebook and is a fine example of Samsung's excellent quality control. The exterior gives off the appearance of a more expensive and capable model, and the keyboard has amply sized keys for most purposes. However, why they chose to leave such a large gap between the edge of the keyboard and the side of the machine is a mystery, as the keys are a little cramped. The touchpad is a little small, however it supports multitouch functions.

The computer is not powerful enough to support demanding applications, however at this price range that is not an expected feature; office and internet is handled with no issues. HD video is no problem for the graphics chipset, and video viewing is assisted by the bright and colourful screen. There is an HDMI output if you wish to get external AV devices involved. Speaking of which, this machine has Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n WiFi and an ExpressCard external device port to serve your connectivity needs.

Unlike most laptops, there is no free Microsoft Works; this means you will have to source an office suite from elsewhere, or purchase the trial version of Microsoft Office that is provided in its place. There are free office suites out there other than Microsoft’s for you to download so this need not be seen as an additional cost on top of the purchase price.

Overall though, the Samsung R520 is the best laptop to buy at this price range, thanks to Samsung’s collect and return warranty and long battery life.
