Samsung R519 review

The screen on offer with this machine is standard in this company at 15.6” (39cm). It has a high resolution and sharp colours, however it’s not particularly bright, and the glossy finish of the case can result in unwanted reflections. That said, the aspect ratio is that of a widescreen movie, making it a good film machine.

The powerplant on offer is a 2.16GHz dual-core Pentium, which makes it one of the more capable processors at this range, however the 2GB of RAM that backs it up is less than some machines can boast. Despite the capable processor, high-end 3D games are not really an option here. The hard drive is 250GB, which should be more than enough for audio files, videos and documents.

For networking, the R519 offers 802.11g WiFi, 10/100 Ethernet and three USB ports. There is a VGA audiovisual outlet, however unlike many laptops at this price range, there is no HDMI outlet for high-definition content.

The keyboard has large keys for comfortable use, however the keyboard can be a bit noisy during use. As for the size of the keyboard, for some reason there is a large amount of apparently unused space between the edge of the keyboard and the edge of the machines, meaning the keys could either have been larger or more spaced out. The touchpad below the keyboard is moderately large.

With a battery life of just over three hours the R519 makes for a good basic laptop for those getting into portable computing; Samsung’s own recently released R520 offers faster 802.11n WiFi, however expect to pay a little more for the privilege.
